Swansea Clyne Valley Railway Walk: Blackpill to Dunvant

About this walk
Follow the old railway through Clyne Valley Country Park from Blackpill to the former Dunvant station area, then return along the same path. The roughly 9.5 km route gives a longer woodland walk on an established surfaced corridor, with gentle railway gradients rather than the steep paths on the valley sides. Allow about 2 hours 45 minutes.
Start in the public pay-and-display car park at the junction of Derwen Fawr Road and Mumbles Road in Blackpill. From the southern parking aisle, use the short pedestrian link onto the shared railway path and turn right inland. Stay on the main Clyne Cycle Path as it curves north beside woodland and the Clyne River, crosses the railway-path bridges and bends west toward Upper Killay. Continue on the railway alignment beneath Gower Road, past Killay Marsh, and north toward Dunvant. Turn around at the former station area beside the Walters Row access, before continuing toward Gowerton, and retrace your steps to the car park.
The valley contains traces of its coal mining, brickmaking and railway past. Keep to the main surfaced trail: the hillside paths and mountain-bike trails are separate routes. This is a shared-use path used by cyclists, runners and, on parts of the route, horse riders. Leave room when passing and keep dogs close. Fallen leaves, puddles and ice can make the surface slippery; much of the inland route is unlit, so plan to finish in daylight.
Check the car-park signs for current charges and hours. Toilets and refreshments are nearby at Blackpill rather than guaranteed along the trail. Follow any local works signs or temporary restrictions. Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
