About this walk

Start at the public car park in Coed Gwilym Park, Clydach, off Pontardawe Road. Follow the park paths past the sports courts to the canal, then turn upstream towards Trebanos. This return walk follows the valley floor to the Upper Clydach Aqueduct in Pontardawe.

The canal runs beside woodland and the River Tawe valley. Pass the carved tree and the two Trebanos locks, separated by their old bridge. Beyond the locks, continue beside the canal to the point where the water enters a culvert. Keep on the old towpath towards Pontardawe when the cycle route bends away towards the river. Follow the established path and short shared access lane, then the path under the bypass. The canal emerges again beside the Upper Clydach Aqueduct. Turn around just beyond the aqueduct and return by the same route to the park.

Allow two hours for the walk and brief stops at the locks and aqueduct. Most of the route is fairly level, with compacted gravel and paved sections, but there are short inclines near Pontardawe. Wet weather can make the towpath muddy or slippery. Keep children close beside open water, give space to cyclists, and keep dogs under control. The Heritage Centre and seasonal canoe hire have their own opening times; do not rely on them for refreshments or toilets. Check the car park signs for current arrangements.

Route checked against Swansea Council's Coed Gwilym Park walk and the Canal & River Trust / Swansea Canal Society Step by Step Clydach to Pontardawe guide. Check Canal & River Trust notices before setting out and follow any local work signs.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
