Glenridding – Striding Edge, Helvellyn & Catstye Cam Loop

Summary

Full-fat Lake District classic. This one’s got teeth.

You start in Glenridding, head up over Birkhouse Moor, and take on Striding Edge — a proper exposed scramble with some hands-on sections. From the top of Helvellyn you loop down past Red Tarn, bag Catstye Cam, then descend via Keppel Cove and the old mine roads.

It’s a demanding route, not one to take lightly, especially if the weather turns. But if you get a good day? One of the best rounds in the Lakes.

Route Breakdown

1. Glenridding to Birkhouse Moor

Out of the village and up via Mires Beck. Path’s steep early on — stone steps and some huffing, but it settles a bit on the shoulder. Hit the cairn on Birkhouse Moor and keep west towards Hole-in-the-Wall.

Good place to check the weather — once you’re on Striding Edge, you’re committed.

2. Striding Edge to Helvellyn

From Hole-in-the-Wall, drop slightly, cross the wall, and pick up the path onto Striding Edge. It starts tame but narrows fast. Scrambling is unavoidable in places, and there’s real exposure either side.

Take your time. If in doubt, there's usually a worn path just below the crest — but you’ll still need hands.

Near the far end is a short climb known as “The Chimney” — a downclimb and then an awkward pull up. Not a place to freeze up.

Once you’re off the ridge, it’s a short slog up onto Helvellyn’s summit plateau. Big, flat, usually full of people, but still special.

3. Descent to Red Tarn & Up Catstye Cam

Drop down Swirral Edge — shorter and less fierce than Striding Edge, but still narrow and easy to slip on. Poles help here.

At the col, you’ve got a choice. You’re going up Catstye Cam, so take a left and zigzag up the sharp ridge. It’s steep but fast. Stunning viewpoint at the top.

4. Return via Keppel Cove

Head back down Catstye Cam the same way, then north along the path above Keppel Cove. This takes you along an old mining leat (water channel) and eventually onto a track.

You’ll pass dam remains, tips, and mine buildings before joining the old road back into Glenridding.

What to Watch For

• Striding Edge: Only go if weather is dry and you're up for a scramble. No shame turning back.
• Swirral Edge: Still needs care — don’t switch off yet.
• Navigation: Between Red Tarn and Birkhouse Moor, especially in mist, can get confusing.
• Exposure: You’re high for a long stretch — Helvellyn’s flat top offers no shelter.

Why This Route?

It’s the classic for a reason. You hit the ridges, get proper summits, Red Tarn, a quieter top in Catstye Cam, and finish down through old mine country. Great variety.
