About this walk
Bannerdale Crags rises sharply above the small village of Mungrisdale on the quiet northern edge of the Lake District. This route is short on distance but big on effort, climbing around 460 metres in just over 2 miles. It is a direct, punchy ascent that wastes no time gaining height.
The walk begins on a clear path from the valley before quickly steepening. The ground is mostly grassy with sections of rougher, eroded path and occasional loose stone. There is no scrambling and no exposed drops on the main line of ascent, but the gradient is sustained and demanding. In wet conditions the slope can be slippery, and the descent requires care on tired legs.
Higher up, the ridge becomes more defined and the views begin to open out across the Northern Fells. The summit is compact and airy enough to feel dramatic without being intimidating. On a clear day you gain a fine perspective across the Skiddaw group and the surrounding rolling fells.
This is a walk best suited to those with some hill experience. Although technically straightforward, it is steep and physically committing for its length. Fit, confident walkers will enjoy it as a rewarding half-day outing or a strong training climb. Those new to fell walking may find the gradient relentless.
Bannerdale Crags may be modest in distance, but it delivers a proper fell experience in a compact and powerful package.
