About this walk
Start on the visitor path just west of Shorne Woods' cafe, beside the small ponds. This out-and-back walk links the central lakes with the wooded slopes of the Knoll. Allow about an hour and a half for the walk and a few pauses by the water. The return follows the same paths, so it is straightforward to turn back sooner.
Head east past the visitor centre and Volunteer Garden towards the fishing lakes. Follow the visitor path north beside the lakes, then west past Dog Pond. At the woodland junction, turn northwest onto the path towards the Knoll. Continue uphill through the trees and take the westward path around the wooded slope to the upper path junction. Turn here and retrace your route to the lakes and visitor centre. Use the council's park map to distinguish the visitor paths from the numerous minor tracks.
The lakeside section has established paths; the woodland section is more uneven and includes slopes, roots and ground that can become muddy. Wear shoes with grip, take your time after rain and keep back from pond edges. This route does not use the steep stepped descent on Cardiac Hill. It is not a step-free accessibility recommendation. Keep dogs under control and on leads in signed zones, and give other path users room.
There is paid parking at the Brewers Road entrance, plus a cafe and toilets at the visitor centre. Check the closing time posted at the gates on arrival: the car park is locked at 7pm or just after sunset, whichever is earlier. Finish in daylight and follow any temporary diversions.
Route based on Kent County Council's park map and visitor information, checked on 3 October 2026.

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
