About this walk

This circular walk around Porthcurno and the Minack Theatre delivers some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in Cornwall, combining steep cliffs, turquoise coves and far-reaching Atlantic views with a strong sense of history and place. It’s a route that feels bold and exposed, with constant changes in elevation and perspective keeping it engaging throughout.

Starting in Porthcurno, the walk quickly leaves the shelter of the valley and climbs onto the South West Coast Path. The ascent is immediate and sets the tone for the route, lifting you above the beach and revealing expansive views along the rugged coastline. Below, the sand and water of Porthcurno feel almost Mediterranean in colour on a clear day, sharply contrasting with the dark rock and heather-covered slopes above.

The cliff-top sections are the highlight of the walk. Paths trace the edge of the land as it drops sharply to the sea, passing a series of coves and headlands where waves break far below. The terrain is more demanding here, with short, steep climbs and descents that add up over the course of the route. Footing can be uneven, and exposure to wind is constant, making this feel like a proper coastal hike rather than a casual stroll.

A key landmark is the Minack Theatre, dramatically carved into the cliff above the sea. Even from the path, its scale and setting are striking, and it adds a cultural counterpoint to the raw landscape. Nearby headlands and viewpoints offer some of the best panoramic views of the walk, stretching along the coast in both directions.

Leaving the cliffs, the route turns inland through quieter farmland and lanes around St Levan. This section provides a welcome change of pace, with gentler gradients and a more settled feel after the intensity of the coast. The contrast highlights just how exposed and energetic the cliff path sections are.

The walk then loops back towards Porthcurno, descending again into the valley and returning to the beach area where it began. Overall, this is a moderately challenging coastal walk that rewards effort with exceptional scenery. It’s best suited to confident walkers who are comfortable with steep terrain and exposure, and it’s at its best in clear weather when the colours of sea and sky fully come into play.
