About this walk

Make a full circuit of Loe Pool, starting from Helston Fairground. The route follows the eastern woods and the boardwalk around Carminowe Creek, crosses the shingle of Loe Bar, then returns through the Penrose estate past the Stables and along the park drive. Woodland, open water and the coast give this walk plenty of variety without a technical ridge. Gravel, uneven paths, steps and soft shingle make it more demanding than the shorter lakeside stroll. Seasonal flooding and conditions at the bar can interrupt the circuit. Do not enter the water at Loe Bar or in the lake. Stay back from breaking waves and turn back if flooding or coastal conditions make the route unsafe.

Start and parking: Begin at the eastern lakeside walking departure from Fairground car park, Helston, TR13 0RA, and finish at the same point. Use the council car-park name and map pin; the National Trust trail header has an incorrect postcode. Cornwall Council runs the car park and its current tariff supersedes older advice calling it free. Charges apply daily 09:00–16:00: up to 1 hour is free but needs a ticket, 1–2 hours costs £1.80, 2–4 hours £3, and 24 hours £4.20. Parking is free 16:00–09:00. JustPark adds a £0.10 transaction fee. Allow enough time for the full walk and stops, and check the machine. The car park opens 24 hours; sleeping and overnight camping are prohibited. Walk the estate in daylight and check visit-day hours.

Route and terrain: Follow the clockwise full lake circuit through the eastern woods, around Carminowe Creek on the boardwalk, across Loe Bar, then past Bar Lodge and the Penrose Stables area before returning along the park drive via Helston Lodge and Oak Grove. Gravel, uneven woodland paths, mapped steps, boardwalk and soft shingle make the full circuit more demanding than the shorter western-shore walk. Mud and flooding are possible. This route is not claimed to be wheelchair-accessible.

Water and coastal danger: Do not swim or enter the water at Loe Bar or Loe Pool at any time. Loe Bar has dangerous currents and tides. Stay well back from breaking waves; storm waves can wash over the bar. Turn back before an unsafe crossing. The lake margins and River Cober can flood seasonally. Do not enter flooded paths. No claim is made that tides never affect the route, and live surf, tide, flood and boardwalk conditions have not been verified. Boating, watersports and fishing are prohibited in the lake.

Dogs and facilities: Dogs are welcome year-round on the estate and Loe Bar. Keep close control and use a short lead around grazing livestock, follow signs and remove waste. The café and toilets at the Stables may close independently; their availability is not required to complete the circuit.

Distance and time: The complete plotted circuit measures 10.716 km, compared with the National Trust rounded 10 km headline. Allow 3–4 hours walking plus breaks. No artificial extension or shortcut across the lake is included.

Detailed route research was checked on 22 October 2026; the National Trust route/property pages and council tariff were rechecked on 23 October. No route-specific closure banner was found. Opening hours do not prove that all paths or the boardwalk are passable. Check current local notices and coastal conditions before setting off; this is desk research, not field clearance.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
