About this walk
Begin at Abbey car park on Buccleuch Street in Melrose. This roughly 11 km walk follows the established riverside walking corridor to Abbotsford and retraces it home. Allow about 3 hours 30 minutes, plus any visit or longer cafe stop. It is an out-and-back variation of the riverside section of the council's Abbotsford and River Tweed walk.
Use the town pavements west past the Greenyards, then St Mary's Road and the paths down towards Bleachfield. Join the south-bank path and continue upstream through the riverside meadows. At Lowood, use the pavement and cross the road with care to reach the continuing path. Stay on the south bank here. Follow the Tweed around the edge of Tweedbank and beneath Redbridge railway viaduct. Near Abbotsford, the stepped path passes underneath the modern road bridge. Continue into the public riverside woodland at Abbotsford and turn around at the end of the mapped woodland section. The house and visitor centre are nearby, but a visit is outside this route.
The route combines pavements, compacted paths, grass and woodland ground. There are steps, gates and uneven sections, so it is not step-free. Riverside stretches can be muddy or flooded after rain. Avoid high river conditions and follow any local closure signs. The Lowood road crossing needs a clear view and a safe gap in traffic; do not cross the narrow traffic bridge. Take sturdy footwear, water and a waterproof layer.
Public toilets and food are available in Melrose. Abbey car park is pay and display; check the signs for the current tariff. Abbotsford estate walks are free to access. Entry to the house and formal gardens is separate, and this walking time does not include a visit. Carry your own refreshments and check opening times if you plan an additional visit.
Researched on 2 October 2026 from Melrose Paths, the council walking map, Abbotsford's estate information and current OpenStreetMap geometry. This is a researched route, not a firsthand report of path conditions. Check the forecast and council closure notices before leaving. Mapping: © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL).

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
