About this walk

Start at the western walking exit of the main Forestry and Land Scotland car park at Mabie Forest. This is the forest car park beside the trail information boards, reached from the A710; the separate Mabie Farm Park entrance does not provide vehicle access to it.

Follow the purple Dalshinnie Glen markers north through the woods beside Chinney Field. The path bends west and meets the forest road before continuing up the glen through Douglas firs. At Dalshinnie Loch, follow the shore circuit round the western end and back along the southern and eastern banks. Rejoin the outward path and follow the purple markers back through the glen to the car park.

Allow about one and a half hours, including a pause beside the loch. The route is mainly gravel and forest paths, with loose stones, exposed roots and some steep sections. The woodland can be wet after rain. Keep children close by the water and leave the shore vegetation undisturbed. Walking and cycle routes cross or briefly share ground here, so look out for riders and keep dogs under control.

Parking is charged, currently £3 for up to three hours or £4 for the day. Portable toilets are available after storm damage led to removal of the old toilet block. The picnic area is close to the car park, and refreshments are available at Mabie House Hotel when open. Follow any forestry signs on arrival. This walk follows the complete FLS Dalshinnie Glen map, with current access and visitor notices checked 3 October 2026.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
