About this walk

Start at Town Wood car park on the A710 just south of Dalbeattie. This is the walking trail car park, about half a mile from the town, rather than the separate 7stanes car park farther south. Take the woodland approach to the trail junction and follow the yellow Plantain Loch markers.

The outward track leads north beside the western shore of Plantain Loch, also called Dalbeattie Loch. Cross the small bridge at its northern end and follow the narrower lochside path around the eastern bank. Continue onto the forest track, take the southern loop back through the woods, then rejoin the approach to Town Wood. Stay with the yellow walking markers where paths and cycle routes meet.

Allow about an hour and a quarter for the full circuit with a stop beside the water. Most of the walk uses firm gravel, but there are short steep slopes, exposed roots and rough rocky patches. FLS grades the trail strenuous despite its short length. Wear shoes with a good grip, take care after rain and keep children close beside the loch. Keep dogs under control and watch for cyclists at crossings and shared tracks.

Town Wood parking is currently £2 for up to three hours or £3 for the day; Blue Badge holders park free. There is a picnic area by the start. Public toilets, shops and refreshments are in Dalbeattie, so plan for those before setting off. This route follows the full FLS yellow trail map, with access, parking and current local notices checked on 3 October 2026.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
