About this walk

Start in the public Market Hill car park in Castle Douglas. Check the parking signs, then walk south along Queen Street and the pavements of the connecting streets to Whitepark Road. Turn onto the signed Lover’s Walk beside the eastern shore of Carlingwark Loch. This town approach adds distance to the shorter loch circuit and keeps the start in a public car park.

Follow Lover’s Walk south, leaving the water behind on a grassy path between hedges and fences. At the path junction take the boardwalk to the right, then continue over the little bridge and along the fenced countryside path to the minor road. Turn right towards Mid Kelton and continue past the Douglas Mausoleum and the Threave Gardens approach. Near the main road, take the separate cycle and walking path. It brings you back along the western side of the loch. Cross the northern park on its surfaced path, return by Lochside Road and St Andrew Street, then climb Queen Street back to Market Hill.

Allow around three hours for the seven kilometre circuit, with time to watch the waterbirds. The marsh and loch are a protected wetland, so keep to the boardwalk and paths. Swans, coots and diving ducks are among the birds seen here, although sightings vary with season. Binoculars are useful and Castle Douglas has shops and cafés for a stop afterwards. Entry to Threave Gardens is a separate visit and is not included.

This is a varied low-level walk with a mixture of town pavements, earth paths, boardwalk and country lane. Boards and grass can be slippery after rain. Wear sturdy footwear and carry a waterproof. The Mid Kelton road section has no continuous pavement: take care at bends, stay alert for traffic and use a verge to let vehicles pass. The return beside the busier road uses its separate walking and cycle path; watch for cyclists and cross local roads carefully. Keep dogs under close control and on a lead around livestock. Turn back if the marsh path is flooded or a boardwalk is closed. The council route leaflet, current local route information, public parking and mapped walking links were checked on 3 October 2026.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
