About this walk
A two-hour circuit of Wanstead Park on the City of London's Chestnut Trail, linking woodland, the Temple and the park's historic pond landscape. The mapped walk is about 5.4 km, mostly level with gentle inclines. Spring brings bluebells in Chalet Wood, while Heronry and Perch Ponds provide places to pause and look for waterbirds.
Start just inside the Warren Road entrance and follow the trail into the park. The opening path crosses towards Ornamental Water, then turns north to circle its long perimeter. Continue round the eastern bank, past the Grotto from the public path outside its fence, then follow the northern side of Perch Pond. At the Wanstead Park Avenue entrance, use the brief pavement link to re-enter the park beside Heronry Pond. Walk its southern bank, round the western end and back along the northern bank. Continue past the Temple and through Chalet Wood to Warren Road. Use the signed trail and mapped paths; keep out of the golf course and fenced compounds.
Current conditions matter: the City's 2026 update reports Ornamental Water completely dry. Do not enter the exposed lakebed or climb the banks and islands. The Grotto has been stabilised, but its compound remains closed. View it from the open path and respect any further works or diversions.
Main tracks alternate with earth and grass paths, which can be muddy or slippery after rain. Wear shoes with grip, stay back from pond edges and choose daylight. Keep dogs under control, on a lead near grazing cattle, and clear of wildlife. Bluebells are best enjoyed from the path. Watch for cyclists on shared sections.
Wanstead and Redbridge Underground stations are within walking distance of the park; allow extra time for the approach. The Tea Hut beside Heronry Pond offers refreshments when open. Toilets at the Temple depend on its limited visitor opening days, so plan a comfort stop before setting off.

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
