About this walk
Start at the public National Park car park beside Ingram Bridge. This out-and-back walk follows the surfaced valley road west to Hartside, with views of the Breamish, the grassy slopes below Brough Law and the broad hills around Greensidehill. It gives a different view of the valley from the hillfort circuits, without taking their steep hillside paths.
Leave the car park through its road entrance, turn left towards Ingram and follow the valley road west. Pass the entrance to Ingram village, then Bulby's Wood car park and its toilets. Continue beside the river and cross Peggy Bell's Bridge. Stay on the main surfaced road as it climbs past Greensidehill, ignoring farm tracks and the turning towards Alnhammoor. Turn back at the Hartside road junction before the farm and retrace the same road to the car park.
Allow about two hours and forty-five minutes for the 9.2 km return. The surface is tarmac with a gradual climb towards Hartside. Much of the road has no separate pavement and it carries cars, bicycles and farm traffic, so stay alert at bends and use safe passing space. Choose a quieter day if you prefer road walking with less traffic. There are no gates or burn fords on this route. Keep dogs on a lead around traffic and livestock.
Toilets are at Bulby's Wood and the Ingram cafe is near the start; check opening times before relying on refreshments. Use the public car park at Ingram rather than the very limited verge spaces at Hartside, and follow parking signs on arrival.

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
