About this walk
Housesteads Circular – Lakes, Lumps, and Roman Legacy
This 10.65km circular walk from the Military Road near Housesteads is a glorious mix of ancient frontier, Ice Age landscape, and wild Northumbrian solitude. It’s a route that veers off the tourist trail just enough to give you space, silence, and some unexpected stories.
The walk starts near the Housesteads car park, quickly rising into open moorland. At just over 1km in, as you settle into the rhythm of the walk, you’ll spot Milestone 37—a Roman distance marker beside the Wall. There’s a ghost waiting for you here: an old centurion (or at least, that’s what he claims), keen to share his memories of marching these ridgelines, watching the mist roll in from the north. He’s gruff, proud, and just a little weary. Tap the ghost in the app and let him bring the stone to life.
Soon after, you’ll veer away from the Wall and begin a long, quiet arc through a landscape shaped by ice. Crag Lough and Broomlee Lough, two glacial tarns nestled against steep crags, appear like blue gems in a sea of green. These were carved during the last Ice Age, and their stillness offers a stark contrast to the drama of the surrounding moors.
The path meanders through boggy lowland and rises again as it swings back toward Hadrian’s Wall. The terrain underfoot can be rough in places—expect a few muddy patches and some rocky climbs—but nothing too challenging if you’re reasonably fit and well-booted.
The final third runs parallel to the Wall, offering elevated views, weathered stones, and that strange, stirring feeling of walking where soldiers once patrolled two thousand years ago. It’s a satisfying loop—varied, peaceful, and full of texture.
