4 Northumberland walks with history at their heart
A ruin, a defensive wall or a place wrapped in local tradition can give a walk a reason to linger.
A ruin, a defensive wall or a place wrapped in local tradition can give a walk a reason to linger. These four Northumberland routes offer different ways to do that: a castle-and-woodland circuit, a riverside town walk, a route to a sandstone cave and a longer outing in the landscape around Hadrian's Wall.
They are separate days out, not a single itinerary. Use the route links to compare the mapped starts and finishes, and leave time to look around. The listed distances and estimates below were checked on 19 October 2026. Visiting a historic attraction may need extra time, an admission ticket or a separate check of opening arrangements.
1. Edlingham Castle, Church and Birsley Wood
Listed distance: 5.5 km / 3.4 miles. Estimated time: 2 hours. Circular.
Choose Edlingham for a walk that puts a historic site alongside a countryside circuit. The Walkmates route links the castle, church and Birsley Wood, giving you a reason to explore beyond the ruin itself. English Heritage describes a manor house that was gradually fortified during the 14th century. That background makes the surviving building worth a proper pause. The castle is listed as free to visit during reasonable daylight hours, with only a small parking area by the church. Check the mapped start and do not count on finding a space immediately.
2. Berwick Riverside and Walls from the station
Listed distance: 3.9 km / 2.4 miles. Estimated time: 47 minutes. Listed as point-to-point.
Berwick offers the town-based option in this selection, combining its riverside with the defensive walls. It is an appealing starting point if you want to build a walk around arriving by train, although you should check your actual service and the route's finish before making plans. English Heritage identifies the town's bastioned defences as mainly Elizabethan, with later alterations. Give yourself time to stop and read the landscape rather than treating the 47-minute estimate as a sightseeing timetable. Despite its town setting, the listing does not establish a step-free route.

3. Swinhoe Farm to St Cuthbert's Cave
Listed distance: 6.7 km / 4.2 miles. Circular; no duration listed.
This listed circular walk near Belford gives the article a different kind of historic interest. St Cuthbert's Cave is a natural sandstone shelter associated with traditions about the saint, rather than a constructed monument. The National Trust's heritage record explains its geological form and records the traditions surrounding it. The route follows bridleways from near Swinhoe Riding Centre towards the cave. Check access before setting out. If the return is blocked, avoid closed or unsafe woodland and retrace the outward route only if safe. Allow extra time: the alternative may differ in length from the listed circuit.

4. Housesteads, Cuddy's Crags and Broomlee Lough
Listed distance: 10.7 km / 6.6 miles. Estimated time: 3 hours. Circular.
Choose this longer circuit when you want the wider landscape around Hadrian's Wall to be part of the day. Its combination of Housesteads, crags and Broomlee Lough offers more scope than a visit confined to the fort. English Heritage's history of Housesteads places the fort's construction within a decade of work beginning on the Wall in AD 122. The National Trust warns of steep, uneven terrain in the area. Check the map and conditions carefully, and arrange any fort visit separately from the walking circuit.

Leave space for the interesting bits
For a shorter listed distance, compare Berwick and Edlingham. For a longer landscape walk, look at Housesteads. For St Cuthbert's Cave, build in time for the return and check access before committing to the circuit. Whichever you choose, plan enough daylight for the walk and the stops that make it worthwhile, and respect signs, archaeological remains and any temporary access restrictions.
