About this walk
A short circuit through Heartwood Forest near Sandridge, with young woodland, open meadow edges and the Magical Wood. Allow about an hour for the 2.4 km route, including a pause among the trees. It starts on firm paths, then uses established woodland paths and grassy tracks with a gentle slope.
Start inside the main Heartwood Forest car park off the B651, and follow the entrance path west to the welcome point. Take the main path north through the young woodland, then turn west on the cross-path and south towards the Magical Wood. Return by the woodland paths and bridleway along the northern edge of Langley Wood, then retrace the short entrance path to the car park. Use the plotted circuit at junctions; this is a planned walk using the public paths on the Woodland Trust map.
Entry and parking are free. The car park has opening and closing times that change seasonally, so check the gate notice before setting off and return before it closes. Sandridge has places for refreshments and public toilets near the village hall, outside this circuit; bring water for the walk.
Wear shoes with grip: the grassy tracks can be muddy and slippery after rain. Keep to the paths, as the forest is not open-access land. Keep dogs under control and on leads on the bridleways, following the signs on site. Watch for horses on shared sections and keep clear of forestry work. Walk in daylight and follow any temporary diversions.
Route and access information checked against the Woodland Trust Heartwood Forest walking map (2026) and visitor information: https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/visiting-woods/woods/heartwood-forest/

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
