About this walk

An out-and-back walk through the northern part of Hatfield Forest and along the Flitch Way, the former railway line on its boundary. The 5.9 km route gives a mix of grassy forest rides, old trees and a fairly level railway path. Allow about 2 hours 30 minutes with stops.

Start at the pedestrian path beside the entrance car park off Bush End Road, CM22 6NE. Follow the internal entrance road west to the boardwalk junction, then turn north on the grassy ride beside Elgin Coppice. At the crossing paths, keep towards Takeley Hill and the estate office, then follow the London Road ride to Hill Gate. Go through the pedestrian gate, turn left onto the Flitch Way and walk west past the site of Stane Street Halt. Continue to the junction at Elmans Green, where the forest boundary path meets the railway trail. Turn here and retrace the route to the entrance car park.

The Flitch Way is shared with cyclists and riders. Inside the forest, expect grass, uneven ground, roots and soft patches rather than a surfaced promenade. Watch for vehicles when using or crossing internal roads. Keep dogs on leads near livestock and wherever signs require, and leave space around grazing animals.

This is an April–October route. The forest can become waterlogged in winter, and rides sometimes close to protect the ground. Check the current ride-status map and notices at the entrance before setting out; respect closures rather than taking an unsigned woodland shortcut. Parking is charged for non-members and free for National Trust members. Gates close at dusk. The lakeside café and toilets are elsewhere in the forest, beyond this plotted route.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
