About this walk
This circular walk explores one of the most atmospheric corners of the North York Moors, following the wooded valley of the River Esk between Grosmont and Beck Hole.
Starting in Grosmont, the route quickly leaves the village behind and drops into the Esk Valley, where riverside paths, woodland tracks and quiet lanes create a peaceful, enclosed feel. The River Esk is a constant companion for much of the walk, flowing clear and fast over gravel beds, with stepping points and footbridges adding interest along the way.
The geology of the valley shapes the experience. Sandstone and shale form steep, wooded sides, while the softer valley floor supports ancient woodland rich in mosses, ferns and lichens. In autumn the woods are particularly striking, but the route has appeal year-round, with birdsong in spring and cool shade in summer.
Beck Hole itself feels tucked away and timeless, a small cluster of buildings surrounded by trees and water. The area has long been shaped by industry, with ironstone mining, railways and rivers all playing their part in the Esk Valley’s history. Today, remnants of this past sit quietly alongside a landscape that has largely returned to nature.
The return leg climbs gently away from the river, giving a different perspective over the valley before looping back towards Grosmont. This section is a little more open, but still peaceful, with occasional glimpses of the heritage railway cutting through the landscape.
Overall, this is a varied and rewarding circular walk, mixing riverside calm, dense woodland and subtle traces of industrial history. It is well suited to a steady half-day outing, with easy-going terrain and plenty to take in without feeling rushed.
