About this walk

A woodland circuit from Fermyn Woods Country Park into the adjoining forest, using established paths and tracks. This version is about 4 km and returns through the pond area of the country park. Allow roughly an hour and a half for a relaxed walk, with time to pause along the woodland edges.

Start at the eastern pedestrian end of the public car park off Lyveden Road. Head past the visitor facilities and follow the park paths east into the woods. The outward leg uses the northern side of the forest circuit; the route then turns south and returns west on the lower tracks, passing the park’s ponds before reaching the car park again. Several forest junctions look similar, so keep the plotted map to hand and use the council’s visitor map at the entrance.

Fermyn forms part of the old Rockingham Forest landscape. Broadleaved woodland, open rides and small ponds give the walk a different character from a uniform plantation trail. The country park is known for its wildlife, particularly butterflies in the warmer months. Look from the public paths without disturbing pond margins, woodland vegetation or fenced areas.

The route combines surfaced paths with earthy and grassy forest sections. Gradients are generally gentle, but this is a longer and less consistently surfaced walk than the short nature trail around the visitor area. Boots are helpful after rain, when mud and puddles can linger. Some of the forest tracks are shared with other users, including riders on the public bridleways; allow room to pass. Horses are not permitted through the country-park visitor area.

Parking is charged. Check the signs and machines for the current fee and payment arrangements; the council also offers PayByPhone. The Skylark Café and toilets are near the start, with seasonal opening hours and holiday closures. Carry water for the forest section rather than relying on facilities away from the entrance.

Keep dogs under control, follow local lead requirements and keep them out of the children’s play areas. Stay clear of forestry machinery and obey any temporary closure signs; if work blocks the mapped route, use an open signed alternative or return the way you came.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
