About this walk

A straightforward out-and-back walk into the northern part of Fineshade Wood, using the established walking paths and forest roads above Top Lodge. The plotted route is about 3.2 km in total, with the return following the outward path. Allow around an hour to an hour and a quarter, depending on your pace and stops.

Start at the walking entrance near the top of the main public car park. Follow the path west towards the main woodland trail, turn north and continue through the trees. Beyond the bend in the forest road, the route turns east for a short stretch before reaching its turnaround point at the end of the plotted outward leg. Retrace the same route to Top Lodge. This is a shorter visit to the northern walking network, rather than the complete Dales Wood trail.

The woodland changes along the way, with old broadleaved trees, conifers and more open rides. Fineshade was part of the Rockingham Forest landscape and has a long history of woodland management. Its spring flowers and summer insects add interest, while winter makes the structure of the trees easier to see. Enjoy whatever is present without picking plants or disturbing wildlife.

The main paths are established and generally firm, with some gentle slopes. Loose stones, wet leaves and puddles can make footing less secure after rain. Use walking shoes with a good grip. This route has no need to cross the A43 and turns back before entering the more distant southern woodland. Keep to the walking paths and forest roads; separate cycling skills trails are not part of the route. Give other users space where paths are shared.

Parking is charged and uses number-plate recognition. Forestry England asks visitors to pay on arrival for their intended stay, using the current card, device or RingGo arrangements shown on site. Check the car-park closing time before setting off, especially in winter. The café, toilets and visitor facilities at Top Lodge have their own opening hours.

Dogs are permitted; keep them under control and follow signs near wildlife areas and the visitor facilities. Obey any temporary forestry-work closures and return along an open path if the onward route is blocked.
