About this walk
A circuit through Stanwick Lakes’ nature reserve, combining the northern lake paths with the Solstice Lake loop near the visitor centre. The route is about 4.5 km on established paths. Allow roughly an hour and three quarters at a steady pace with time to stop at viewpoints.
Start at the western pedestrian edge of the main public car park. Follow the central path north, passing the smaller waters near the visitor hub and continuing beside Celtic Lake. Go around Ox-Eye Lake on the outer paths rather than using its shorter causeway. Return south beside Grebe and Celtic lakes, then take the lower circuit around Solstice Lake before returning through the visitor area. The reserve map at the entrance helps distinguish the walking circuits from the play trails and the longer former-railway route.
This walk offers broad water views, reed margins and a quieter northern section beyond the busiest visitor facilities. Stanwick’s heritage interpretation gives context to the settlements found here before gravel extraction created the lakes. The recreated Iron Age roundhouse is near the central trail, while interpretation along the wider paths explains different periods of local history. The remains of the Roman villa are not an exposed building to explore.
Paths are generally firm and gradients gentle. A few sections are shared with cyclists and riders, so leave room to pass and keep children close at busy junctions. Lakes and channels have unguarded edges. Keep to the public paths and out of bird-sanctuary islands, reedbeds and signed protected areas. Wildlife sightings are possible rather than guaranteed.
Dogs must be on leads on this part of the reserve, including near the visitor centre. Keep them out of the water and away from nesting birds.
Parking is charged through number-plate recognition. Visitors normally pay at a machine when ready to leave, following the instructions on site. Check the barrier closing time before setting off, as cars can be locked in overnight. The café and toilets are near the visitor centre; their opening hours are shorter than the reserve’s and vary by day. Carry water for the northern loop.

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
