About this walk
A 3.3 km circuit through Elvaston Castle Country Park, combining the lake, historic garden paths, Moorish Temple and Golden Gates. Allow about an hour and a half at a relaxed pace, with time to stop among the estate trees and look at the garden structures. The castle itself is closed to the public; this walk explores the grounds.
Start in the main pay-and-display visitor car park off Borrowash Road, the B5010. Follow the lake-side paths west towards the castle gardens. Continue into the formal garden area, with a short look at the Moorish Temple, then follow the avenue towards the Golden Gates at the southern end. Return north through the eastern garden paths, joining East Avenue and the park path back to the car park. Follow the plotted line and respect any fenced garden areas or staff-only signs.
The historic landscape was developed for the fourth Earl of Harrington by gardener William Barron. Its avenues, mature trees and ornamental structures make this a walk to take slowly. Views of the castle and gardens are the main attraction, rather than access inside the building.
The main routes are generally easy, with a mixture of surfaced paths, dirt paths and garden tracks. Some stretches become muddy or slippery after rain. The lake has unguarded edges, and the wider park is used by families, cyclists and horse riders. Keep dogs under control, give other visitors room and follow on-site signs. Do not climb the rockwork or enter closed buildings. Temporary event closures can affect the lakeside paths, so check the council’s notices before visiting.
Park entry is free and parking is charged. Toilets and refreshments are near the main visitor facilities, subject to opening hours. For vehicle access, follow the brown signs from Borrowash Road: the council specifically warns that Bridlegate Lane off the A6 gives no vehicle access to the park, and the cricket-club access is for authorised vehicles only. Check the park gate times and return before closing.

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
