About this walk
A varied 6.3 km circuit through Shipley Country Park, linking Osborne’s Pond, the former Shipley Hall site and the northern shore of Mapperley Reservoir. Allow around two and a half hours for the walking, hilltop views and a few wildlife stops. The route combines established park paths, woodland tracks and public bridleways.
Start in Coppiceside Car Park beside the visitor centre, reached from Heanor’s main park entrance. Follow the paths past the visitor facilities and east towards Osborne’s Pond. The route then turns south onto Shipley Lane, climbs towards Derby Lodge and visits the remains of the old hall and surrounding gardens on Shipley Hill. Continue through the hill’s woodland paths before descending to Mapperley Reservoir. Follow the northern shore west, then use the signed bridleways via Bell Lane and Coppice Hill to return to the visitor centre.
The hall site and mature estate trees sit within a landscape also shaped by coal mining. The park opened in 1976 after reclamation of the former colliery ground. Today the combination of ponds, woodland and open paths makes this a rewarding circuit without needing to enter adjoining private land.
Expect several gentle climbs, short steps near Osborne’s Pond and uneven or muddy ground in the woods. Boots or shoes with a good tread are recommended after rain. Paths and bridleways are shared with cyclists and horses: give riders room and keep dogs close when passing wildlife or livestock. Stay on the public paths, respect fences and on-site closures, and keep children away from unguarded water edges.
Park entry is free, but Coppiceside Car Park is pay and display. The small parking area at the hall site is reserved for Blue Badge holders and is not the start point. Toilets and drinks are available near the visitor centre during opening hours; further toilet blocks are shown at Derby Lodge and Mapperley Reservoir, but check availability before relying on them.

The plotted circuit uses public routes outside the private Shipley Lake grounds.

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
