About this walk

Start at the Scottish Canals visitor car park beside Crinan Basin. Follow the waterside path north beside the basin, cross the walkway at the old dummy lock near the sea lock, then follow the eastern quay onto the canal towpath. Stay on the towpath on the north and east bank throughout this walk.

The first section runs between Crinan Wood and Loch Crinan, passing Crinan swing bridge without crossing the canal. Continue around the wooded bend to Bellanoch Marina, with views across the River Add estuary and the wetlands of Moine Mhor. At Bellanoch, cross the road carefully beside the swing bridge and keep following the same canal bank. The next reach leads inland to Dunardry. Turn around at the western foot of Lock 13, the first lock of the flight, and retrace the towpath and basin crossing to the car park.

Allow around three hours for the 10.6 km return, including short stops. Most of the route is a broad, surfaced shared walking and cycling path with little climbing. There are unguarded water edges and drops from the banks, so supervise children and keep dogs under close control. Give room to cyclists and keep clear of working locks, moorings and bridge machinery. Crinan village has public toilets on the quay and places for refreshments; check seasonal opening before relying on them. Check the car park signs for current charges and restrictions.

Scottish Canals confirmed the basin access works and towpaths reopened in May 2026, with finishing work reported in June. Check its ongoing works notices before travelling and follow any local signs or staff instructions. This walk stays on the canal path rather than entering the forest trails or crossing tidal ground.

Route and access information: Scottish Canals canal maps, current works notices and winter 2026/27 programme; Woodland Trust Crinan Wood visitor information; Argyll and Bute Council parking information. Checked 4 October 2026.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
