About this walk

Old John’s hilltop tower and the Yeomanry War Memorial give this Bradgate circuit its big views. From Hunts Hill car park, climb the established paths to Old John, continue to the memorial, then descend around the southern edge of Elder Plantation into the lower park. Walk beside the carriageway and River Lin, passing the outside of Bradgate House’s ruins and continuing towards Deer Barn. The return climbs the existing paths through the upper park and past the Sliding Stones area before returning to Hunts Hill. Allow about 2½ hours for the roughly 6¼ km circuit, including viewpoint and refreshment stops.

Start at Hunts Hill (Old John) car park off Warren Hill, opposite Benscliffe Road, LE6 0AH. Parking is charged; this car park uses pay-and-display or PayByPhone. Park entry is free. Hunts Hill has toilets, and Deer Barn has a tea room and visitor facilities when open. Check the entrance board for the day’s gate-closing time and return before it closes.

The hill paths include uneven ground, rocky sections and grassy slopes which become slippery or muddy after rain. Wear shoes with grip and allow for wind on the tops. Follow the plotted existing paths, respect conservation signs and stay outside the enclosed plantations and deer sanctuary. This route does not require entry to the ruins. Keep at least 50 metres from deer, never feed or approach them, and give them room to cross the path. October is rutting season, so be especially cautious. Keep dogs on a short lead throughout this circuit; the lower park includes mandatory lead areas.

Planned using Bradgate Park Trust’s visitor map and current visitor guidance, including its parking and deer advice. Check the Trust’s notices before setting out: https://www.bradgatepark.org/visitor-guidance

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
