About this walk
A woodland circuit through Bacton Wood, also known as Witton Wood, near North Walsham. Start beside the information point in the free Forestry England car park off Plantation Road. Follow the northern path west, then turn into the woodland along the western rides. The route follows the woodland edge south, turns through the interior paths and continues around the southern part of the wood. Return through the eastern rides, take the diagonal path beside the small pond, and climb back through mixed woodland to the northern path and car park.
The wood contains mature oaks, beech and conifers, with a mixture of grassy rides, earth paths and firmer forest tracks. There are gentle slopes, uneven roots and sections that can become muddy after rain. Allow about two hours at a relaxed walking pace with short stops. Follow the plotted route at the numerous track junctions; this circuit uses the wider woodland network and is not the short Yellow trail. Forestry England currently warns that Yellow trail waymarking is under maintenance.
The forest is open from dawn to dusk. Parking is free, but there are no toilets and no designated accessible parking spaces. Dogs are allowed; keep them under control and give cyclists and horses space on shared paths. Stay clear of the pond edge, respect any temporary forestry barriers and event marshals, and take litter home. No barbecues are permitted. The walk stays inside the public woodland without a road or railway crossing.

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
