The summit features a prominent granite cairn and a trig point, providing a perfect backdrop for that elusive summit selfie.
Primarily composed of granite, Mount Keen showcases the spectacular geological formations typical of the Cairngorms, making it a fine spot for geology enthusiasts. The rugged terrain provides ample evidence of ancient glaciation.
From the summit, hikers can enjoy panoramic views of the Cairngorms, the Grampians, and the rolling hills of Aberdeenshire. On a clear day, the sight is absolutely breath-taking!
The name 'Keen' may derive from the Gaelic 'Cion,' meaning 'a head or promontory', reflecting the mountain's sweeping vista.
Mount Keen is one of the most easterly Munros and has been a beloved walking destination for generations, capturing the hearts of local climbers.
A scenic route starting from the Glen Tanar car park, winding through forests and heather, leading up to the summit. The path is well-defined and intermittently offers views over the surrounding valleys.
This steeper route provides a more direct approach to the summit and should only be attempted by those confident in their navigation skills. Be prepared for some rougher ground!

Limited public transport options are available; the nearest bus stops are in Ballater, approximately 9 miles away.
