The summit of Lochnagar features a prominent cairn, providing the perfect photo opportunity for hikers to mark their achievement. From here, climbers can enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding landscape, including the deep blue waters of Loch Muick.
Lochnagar is primarily composed of granite, which contributes to its rugged appearance and makes it a popular destination for climbers and hikers alike. The landscape showcases magnificent glacial features, with deep corries and striking cliffs that are a result of the last Ice Age.
Upon reaching the summit, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking vistas including the Cairngorms mountains, the expansive Glen Muick, and far-reaching views towards the North Sea on clear days.
The name 'Lochnagar' comes from the Gaelic 'Loch Na Gar', meaning 'Lake of the Spite'. Cac Carn Beag translates to 'Small Cairn Hill'.

This is the most popular and well-known route to the summit of Lochnagar, starting from the Spittal of Glen Muick car park. The path leads around the northern shore of Loch Muick before climbing steadily through the corrie of Glas Allt. After passing the waterfall, you'll ascend to the plateau and onwards to the summit of Cac Carn Beag. Excellent views of the corrie and surrounding Cairngorms are guaranteed.
This circular route takes in Lochnagar as well as four other Munros in the White Mounth range: Carn a' Choire Bhoidheach, Carn an t-Sagairt Mor, Cairn Bannoch, and Broad Cairn. Starting from the Spittal of Glen Muick car park, it follows the same start as the classic route but extends into a full-day adventure across high plateaus and ridgelines. A rewarding option for experienced walkers.
This less-frequented route begins at the Allt na Guibhsaich lodge, following a track through pine woodland before opening out into the upper reaches of the corrie. It provides an alternative ascent to Cac Carn Beag and is a great choice for those seeking a quieter day on the hill.
This extended route starts in Ballater and makes its way to Loch Muick before following the classic route to the summit. It adds significant distance and is ideal for those seeking a challenging, long day out in the mountains. It combines forest tracks, open moorland, and mountain paths.
This winter-specific route follows the same path as the classic route but requires extra caution due to snow and ice. Starting from Glen Muick, the path ascends past the Glas Allt waterfall and onto the plateau. Winter conditions demand appropriate gear and experience. The snow transforms the corrie into a dramatic and beautiful winter landscape.
Parking is available at the Loch Muick car park, which accommodates approximately 100 vehicles. Arrive early in busy seasons to ensure a spot.
Public transport options are limited. The nearest bus service operates from Ballater, approximately 12 km away.
