Unfortunately, if you expect to park your car right on the island, you’ll be left high and dry! The nearest parking is at Castle Archdale, about 5 km away from the boat landing.

Routes

Although not a mountain trail, Devenish offers a delightful walk once you land. The path from the boat landing to the historical sites is a breezy 2.5 km, suitable for all ages and abilities. Spend about an hour soaking in the history and views!

Summit Features

Upon reaching the island, you'll be greeted by the grand sight of ancient ruins, including a medieval monastic settlement and the striking round tower. Take a moment to appreciate these remnants of times gone by—perfect for some reflective pondering or Instagramming, if that’s your thing.

Views

From various vantage points around the ruins, visitors can capture sweeping views over Lough Erne and the mesmerizing patchwork of the Fermanagh countryside. Spring and summer are the best seasons to see the island in its full glory, but autumn does bring a spectacular show of colours.

Hazards

While the paths are generally easy, be careful! They can get slippery in wet conditions, so watch your step—after all, there's no need to channel an episode of ‘Wipeout’ while exploring.

Facilities

Facilities are somewhat lacking on the island itself. However, you can find cafes and public toilets in Irvinestown, about 7 km away, perfect for refueling after your island adventure.

History

The name 'Devenish' literally means 'the pleasant place’ in Irish. It’s certainly a fitting moniker for this serene escape. Historically, the island was significant as it was once a monastic site founded by St. Molaise in the 6th century. Walking amongst the remnants of this monastic settlement, you can almost hear the echoes of history.
