About this walk

Start at the red-arrow trailhead immediately beside the main Peatlands Park car park, reached from Derryhubbert Road by following the park signs from M1 junction 13. This is the full Peatlands Walk through the park's woodland, raised bog and Derryadd Lough, allowing about three hours for the walk and short stops.

Follow the red waymarks around the western park paths and Mullenakill woodland, then continue north along the bog edge into Annagarriff Wood. The route turns east through the nature reserve before heading south to cross Derryvane Road and reach Derryadd Lough. Walk the complete lake circuit, then follow the marked return across Derryvane Road and through the central park paths to the starting trailhead. Take care at both road crossings: they are ordinary crossings rather than traffic-controlled crossings.

The route mixes tarmac, woodland tracks and woodchip paths. Wet surfaces can be slippery and uneven, so wear suitable footwear and keep to the established path system. DAERA requires the site manager's permission before leaving the paths in Annagarriff Nature Reserve. The open bog and lake provide a contrast to the oak and birch woodland; flowers and wildlife vary with the season. Keep dogs under control and clear up after them.

Entry and the main car park are free. Check the displayed seasonal gate closing time before leaving the car and allow enough time to return. For an autumn visit, plan to finish before 17:00 rather than relying on late access. The park railway is currently not operating. Follow any local restriction signs and turn back if a path is closed.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
