This is the most popular route to Ben Loyal's summit, starting from Ribigill Farm near Tongue. The path begins with a gentle climb through fields and moorland before gaining height over rocky terrain. Follow the well-trodden path towards An Caisteal, the highest peak of the ridge. The summit offers breathtaking views of the Kyle of Tongue, the surrounding hills, and the northern coastline.
This circular route begins and ends at Ribigill but takes a scenic detour via Sletill and Lochan Fiaclach. The route offers a more varied landscape, including boggy terrain, small lochans, and rocky ridges. After summiting An Caisteal, descend via the southern slopes to complete the circuit. This route is less direct but rewards hikers with solitude and diverse scenery.
Starting from the shores of Loch Loyal, this route offers a less-trafficked approach to Ben Loyal. The hike begins at the loch's northern end and involves crossing open moorland before ascending the ridge. While navigation can be tricky due to the lack of a clear path, the solitude and views over Loch Loyal make this route highly rewarding.
For those short on time, this out-and-back route focuses on a direct ascent of An Caisteal. Starting at Ribigill Farm, follow the main path steadily upward, bypassing some of the ridge's lower peaks. While shorter, this route still delivers the spectacular views from the summit.
This less-common route starts near Strathmore River and follows a rough path through the glen before ascending the western slopes of Ben Loyal. The route is remote and requires good navigation skills, but offers a quieter experience with unique perspectives of the mountain.
There's a small car park at NC572100, a short distance from the start of the trail. It's free and offers space for several vehicles, but arrive early to snag a good spot.
Regular buses operate from Thurso to Lairg, but be prepared for a bit of a walk (around 10 km) to reach the trailhead from the bus stop.
