About this walk

This short out-and-back follows the upper seafront pavement from the East Street/Percy Street end towards Grand Parade, then returns along the same line. The mapped distance is about 1.04 km; getting to the starting junction is extra. No car park, private garden, beach, pier or paid-attraction entrance is included.

Across King Edward's Bay, Pen Bal Crag supports the priory ruins above a sequence of Carboniferous and Permian rocks. The contrasting layers help explain the shape of the headland. This is a landward, landscape-scale interpretation of the cliff succession, not a route to touch the strata or inspect the Tynemouth Dyke. Particular beds and contacts may be obscured or difficult to distinguish; no exact exposure view is guaranteed.

Allow around 30 minutes, or roughly 25โ€“40 minutes with observation stops; this is an estimate. Ascent has not been verified. Stay on the established pavement and behind protective barriers. Watch for vehicles at access points and other pavement users. Coastal wind, wet surfaces and ice can affect conditions; no step-free or wheelchair-accessibility certification is made.

Do not descend towards cliff bases or cross barriers to improve a view. Check current local access and works information before travelling, follow temporary signs and turn back if the pavement is obstructed. This description does not certify that the entire corridor is currently unobstructed. Do not substitute the beach, pier or carriageway for a closed pedestrian section.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
