About this walk

A full forest circuit from the public High Lodge car parks, following the long yellow Fir walking trail rather than either of its shorter loops. Allow about three and a half hours for the forest-floor paths, junctions and a stop beside medieval Thetford Warren Lodge.

Start at the Badger parking area and follow the pedestrian connection through the visitor hub to the walking-trail starts. The route heads southwest into the woods, turns east across the southern forest paths and continues along the longer southeast extension before passing Warren Lodge. The stone lodge is thought to date from around 1400 and later housed the warreners who managed the surrounding rabbit grounds. The northern return stays within the forest, crosses the High Lodge access drive and turns back toward the visitor hub. Follow the yellow Fir signs at junctions and keep to the long route at the marked 5 km and 10 km shortcuts.

The ground is mostly gently rolling, but this is a moderate walking trail rather than an accessible surfaced circuit. Expect roots, dips, narrow stretches, soft sand and mud after rain. Wear footwear with a good grip, take water and carry the operator's trail map; mobile reception can be poor. Watch for cyclists and other forest users at track crossings, take care at the access-drive crossing and keep dogs under control. Stay outside the signed rifle-range area and obey forestry barriers.

Parking is paid and cashless, using number-plate recognition with payment before departure. Toilets and a cafe are at High Lodge; there are no toilets around the Fir trail and only a few benches. Check the current gate-closing time before setting out. On 6 October 2026 Forestry England listed the walking trails and car park as open, with some play areas closed for emergency tree work until 9 October. Respect those local barriers and check for updated notices before visiting.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
