About this walk
Start at the southern walking exit of Halliwell’s / West Port public car park, beside the path into the Haining estate. Take the woodland path south, then turn left to follow the curving path through the northern woods. Where it meets the wider estate drive, turn towards the house and stable buildings.
Continue past the Coach House and Stables to the west shore of Haining Loch. Follow the firm lochside path south, cross the wooden footbridge at the lower end and return along the eastern shore. There are views back to the mansion across the water. At the northern end, take the path back up beside the house to the estate drive, then return through the western side of the northern woodland loop to the car park.
Allow about an hour and a quarter for the two connected circuits and a few stops. Most of the route is on gravel or surfaced paths, with short gradients, woodland roots and a wooden bridge. Expect muddy edges after rain and take care on wet leaves and boards. Keep children close by the loch. The Trust advises against swimming because of algae blooms; dogs are welcome but should be kept under control around wildlife.
The grounds are open to the public all year. There is no permanent café, and the house and its toilets open only for public events. The nearest public toilets are in Halliwell’s / West Port car park, with shops and refreshments a short walk away in Selkirk. This route uses the loch and northern woodland paths shown on the council map; the Trust’s current visitor information was checked on 3 October 2026.

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
