About this walk

A woodland and deer-park walk from the Savill Garden visitor area, with Cow Pond on the outward path and the Copper Horse as the turning point. Allow around 2 hours 15 minutes for the 5.9 km return walk, including a pause on Snow Hill to look down the Long Walk towards Windsor Castle.

Park in the paid Savill Garden visitor car park, TW20 0UJ. The plotted start is on the walking route just north of the car park and visitor centre. Head north along Rhododendron Ride, continue beside the eastern side of Cow Pond and meet Bishopsgate Road. Turn left along the estate road to the pedestrian deer-park gate. Once through, follow the established route north-west along Prince Consort Drive, cross the small bridge and climb the footpath to the Copper Horse on Snow Hill. Stay outside the statue enclosure and any fenced repair work. Retrace the same paths to the Savill visitor area.

Most of the route follows broad estate roads and compacted paths, with rougher ground and a short climb near the monument. Stones, roots and wet leaves can make the woodland stretches slippery. Watch for permitted estate vehicles and cycles outside the deer park. The paths are unlit, so finish in daylight. This route stays outside the paid Savill Garden. Refreshments and toilets are available at its visitor centre during opening hours.

Keep well away from deer, especially during the autumn rut. Do not approach or feed them, and put dogs on a short lead throughout the deer park. Cycles and scooters are prohibited there, even when pushed. Access checked on 3 October 2026: the estate has announced deer-park closures on 14, 19 and 20 October. Check Windsor Great Park visitor updates before travelling and choose another day if the gate is closed.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
