About this walk
A short woodland circuit from Salcey Forest’s visitor centre, linking Elephant Pond with the established paths north of Salcey Lawn. The 2.6 km walk takes around an hour to an hour and a quarter at a leisurely pace. It stays within the forest and avoids walking along Wootton Road.
From the visitor-centre car park, take the pedestrian path into the woods and continue north towards Elephant Pond. Follow the paths around the pond, then turn into the northern woodland for a wider loop before returning south along the western side of Salcey Lawn. Keep to the forest paths: the lawn and its buildings are private. The final section leads back to the café and car park. Use the plotted route at junctions, as several walking, cycling and running routes meet here.
Salcey’s mixture of older trees, woodland rides and a small pond gives this compact route plenty of variety. Forestry England records that the pond was used by two circus elephants helping with timber extraction during the Second World War. Today it is a quiet place to pause, with woodland birds often heard along the surrounding paths.
Terrain is generally gentle, with gravel tracks and smaller woodland paths. Boots are useful after rain, when earth sections can be muddy. This is not the short surfaced accessible Elephant Walk, so do not assume the entire circuit is suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.
There are toilets and a café at the visitor centre; check opening hours if planning to use them. Parking is charged through number-plate recognition and should be paid straight after parking, using the machine or the advertised RingGo service. Allow time to return before the seasonal vehicle gate closes. Forestry operations are currently taking place elsewhere in the forest: follow any signed closures or diversions and do not enter work areas.
Keep dogs under control and share the wider tracks considerately with cyclists, runners and horse riders. Take litter home.

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
