About this walk
A full circuit of Sywell Reservoir, following the country park’s established lakeside paths around both arms of the water. This 5 km version includes the outer loop at Spindle End rather than cutting across the shorter causeway. Allow about two hours for a steady walk with time to pause at the viewpoints.
Start at the main car park off Washbrook Lane, near the Pump House Café. Take the park path towards the west end of the dam, then follow the reservoir shoreline through Hayes Wood and around the western inlet. Continue along the north shore, go around the outside of Spindle End, and return south beside the eastern bank. The final section crosses the dam and descends the steps to the visitor facilities and car park.
There is a pleasing change between open views over the reservoir and quieter stretches beside woods, hedges and meadows. The former waterworks buildings near the start give some context to the reservoir’s history. Look for the park’s interpretation panels and benches along the route. Wildlife refuges lie beside parts of the trail: stay on the marked public path and keep out of fenced or signed protected areas.
Most of the circuit is gentle, but it is longer than the short heritage stroll near the café. Expect compacted paths, earthy sections and a long flight of steps below the dam. Wet weather can leave parts muddy, so walking boots are useful. The reservoir has unguarded edges and anglers use parts of the banks; give them space, supervise children and keep dogs out of the water.
Parking is charged, with machines and the council’s advertised PayByPhone service. Follow the payment instructions on the signs. The access gates are locked overnight on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, so check the posted return time. Toilets and the Pump House Café are near the start; the café’s opening can depend on the weather.
Dogs are welcome under control, with local signs showing any lead requirements. Cycling is not permitted in this country park.

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
