About this walk

An 8 km circuit from Denbies Hillside through Ranmore Common and the wider Polesden Lacey estate. Allow about 3 hours for the climbs, muddy stretches and viewpoint stops. Woodland tracks, two ornamental bridges and the open chalk hillside make this a varied walk without needing to enter the paid house and gardens.

Start at the pedestrian exit of the National Trust's Denbies Hillside car park on Ranmore Common Road. Cross the road carefully, turn left along the wide grass verge and take the signed Youth Hostel track after Fox Cottages. Follow the left fork downhill to Tanners Hatch, then continue through the valley and climb Connicut Lane beneath the Italian Bridge. At Polesden Road, cross to the footpath opposite and follow it beside the road towards the estate entrance.

Continue past Home Farm and beneath the Thatched Bridge. The public bridleway leads towards Yew Tree Farm and then climbs back through the woods. Follow the council route's right fork towards Ranmore Common Road, cross carefully and pass the scout campsite. Turn left onto the North Downs Way, then continue into Steer's Field and return towards the church spire and car park.

Several junctions need attention, so download the complete route and carry a charged phone. These are rural roads with traffic: use the verge, stop before crossing and wait for clear sightlines and a safe gap. Give way to horses and watch for estate or farm vehicles on shared tracks. Expect uneven ground, roots, loose stones and slippery mud after rain. Keep dogs on leads near grazing animals and give livestock plenty of space.

The car park charges non-members; members park free but must validate their parking. Mobile signal is limited, so prepare JustPark before arrival if using the app, or use the machine. Bring water and plan a toilet stop beforehand. Refreshments and toilets at Polesden Lacey require an extra detour and depend on opening hours; admission is charged for the house and gardens.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
