Box Hill - Stepping Stones Circuit

This is one of those short circuits that packs far more into its distance than it has any right to. Starting at the Box Hill Visitor Centre on the summit ridge, you head out along a broad, gentle path with big, open views across the Weald. It lulls you for a moment, almost inviting you to think this is going to be an easy stroll. It isn’t. Very quickly the ground drops away and you begin a steep descent through shaded yew woodland. Around 275 steps carry you down toward the River Mole, the trees parting just enough for occasional glimpses of the valley floor below.

At the bottom you reach the famous stepping stones. On a calm day they’re a joy — seventeen chunky stones spaced across the width of the river, with the water easing past your boots as you hop your way over. After rain, the stones can disappear under fast-moving water, in which case the adjacent footbridge is the sensible fallback. Either way, crossing here feels like a moment. You’ve come off the chalk ridge, dipped right into the landscape, and now you’re climbing back out.

Once across, the route drifts through Burford Meadow, a soft, green contrast to the dark yews above. Chalk cliffs – the “Whites” – loom ahead, catching the light, and the path begins its steady climb back towards the ridge. The return is a proper leg-waker: a mix of woodland trail and chalky slope, tightening into a final uphill pull.

Near the top you skirt around Box Hill Fort, a curious Victorian relic now home to a protected bat colony. The fort marks the final change of mood; from here the path levels out and carries you back to the Visitor Centre, closing the loop neatly.

It’s only about two miles, but it feels like a full story — ridge, woods, river, meadow, climb, history, then back to the ridge again. Perfect for a quick adventure, a warm-up before a longer day, or a relaxed outing with friends who want something scenic without committing to a long trek. Whether you cross the stones or take the bridge, it’s a classic Box Hill outing that gives you a lot for very little time on your feet.
