About this walk
Start at the council's free Beach Road car park above Runkerry Beach in Portballintrae. Follow the footpath downhill to the Threequarter Footbridge over the River Bush, cross it and turn right along the wooden boardwalk. At the railway-path junction turn left, keeping to the shared walking and cycling route through the dunes.
Stay beside the heritage railway towards its Causeway terminus rather than turning onto the beach or Runkerry Head cliff path. Near the station take the pedestrian path uphill towards the Causeway Hotel. Follow the public pedestrian approach over the visitor centre's grass roof and descend the steps to join the Blue Trail. Follow its kerbed footpath downhill to the paved turning area beside the famous basalt columns, then return along the same route. The mapped walk ends on the surfaced path before the stones; climbing the columns is optional and not part of this route.
Allow about 2 hours 15 minutes for the return walk. The railway section is mainly gravel, with boardwalks and short slopes; the Causeway approach includes steps and a sustained descent followed by the uphill return. Boards can be slippery when wet. Watch for cycles and railway crossings, give way to the shuttle bus on the Blue Trail, and follow ranger advice and any local barriers. Wear shoes with good grip and choose daylight and settled weather.
The coastline is open dawn to dusk. Exterior toilets are available beside the Causeway Hotel; visitor-centre facilities require a Visitor Experience ticket. Check current signs for parking and access restrictions before setting off. Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
