About this walk
Start at the public Greenside car park in Peebles. Allow about 1 hour 30 minutes for this roughly 4 km out-and-back beside the River Tweed, through Hay Lodge Park and below Neidpath Castle. The castle is seen from the path; access inside the building is a separate visit.
Leave the car park on the Greenside access lane and use the path beside the swimming pool to reach the riverside footbridge. Cross into Hay Lodge Park and keep to the lower riverside route. Steps lead into the park. Continue west beyond the lawns into woodland, following the path above the Tweed beneath Neidpath Castle. Stay on the river path past the castle to the wooded bend west of it. This is the turnaround; retrace the same path through the park to Greenside. The mapped walk does not require the railway tunnel or a road bridge crossing.
The park section is gentler, but the woodland path has roots, rocky ground, steps and short slopes. Expect mud after rain and take care where the bank falls towards the river. Wear footwear with a good grip. Avoid the route if the river is flooding, and turn back at any closure or damaged section. This is not a step-free walk. Take water and allow extra time for stops.
Greenside is pay and display. The council lists charges of £1–£7 from 1 October 2026, applying Monday to Saturday, 08:30–17:00, with RingGo code 12663. Check the signs for the tariff and any restrictions. Peebles town centre has cafés nearby; check opening hours before relying on a stop.
Researched on 2 October 2026 from the council's Paths Around Peebles map and roadbook, current parking information and OpenStreetMap. This follows the Neidpath riverside section as an out-and-back, rather than the full Lyne circuit. The council closure list was checked; recheck notices and the forecast before setting out. This is researched guidance, not a firsthand condition report. Mapping: © OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL.

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
