About this walk

Start at the public Canalside Car Park at Lower Maunsel Lock, off Bankland Lane near North Newton. Follow the car park path to the lane, cross Maunsel Bridge carefully and turn right onto the southbound towpath. Stay on the canal side past the lock and along the short shared lane beside Higher Lock. The Sun and nearby planets of the Somerset Space Walk stand along this stretch. Continue past Outwood Swing Bridge, through the cutting beneath the A361 and around the bend at Swan’s Neck Bridge. The canal then runs beside the railway at Cogload Junction, where the Bristol line crosses above the direct London line. Follow the towpath under Cogload Bridge to Charlton Bridge. Turn at the bridge and return by the same route. There is no need to cross the canal again until Maunsel Bridge at the finish.

This is a mostly level walk through canal-side fields, with short slopes at locks and bridges and a mixture of compacted towpath and short surfaced sections. Allow about 2 hours 45 minutes for the return walk and brief stops. Share the path with cyclists, watch for vehicles on the short lane sections and take care by the unguarded water edge. Low bridge approaches and damp surfaces can be slippery. Keep dogs close and bring water. Maunsel Lock Tea Rooms are near the start; toilets are for customers, so check opening times. Check parking signs and current Canal and River Trust notices before travelling, and follow any temporary towpath restrictions.

Route and visitor information checked against the Inland Waterways Association canal guide, Somerset Council canal information and Canal and River Trust visitor guidance.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
