About this walk

An 8.6 km riverside return walk from Mill Meadows in Henley to the upstream end of Hambleden Lock. Allow about 2 hours 45 minutes, including short stops. The route follows the Thames Path beside the regatta course, with views of Temple Island and Greenlands across the water.

Start at the marked pedestrian exit from the main Mill Meadows car park, reached from Meadow Road. Cross the park on its surfaced path and turn left onto the riverside promenade towards Henley Bridge. Continue on the Thameside pavement, cross the bridge on its pavement and take the signed Thames Path beside the Leander Club. Follow the river downstream past Remenham and Temple Island to the towpath at the upstream end of Hambleden Lock. Turn around here and retrace the same route. Keep on this bank: crossing the lock gates or the weir is not part of the walk.

The route is mostly level, but includes a small footbridge, gates, uneven grass and softer riverside ground. Wear shoes with grip after rain. Keep back from the unguarded river edge and supervise children closely. Use the pavements near Henley Bridge, watch traffic at junctions and take care across the Leander Club driveway. Choose daylight and turn back if the towpath is flooded or closed. The return can be shortened at any point.

Mill Meadows parking is paid; check the posted tariff and event restrictions. Henley station is within walking distance of the start. Public toilets and a café are available at Mill Meadows subject to opening hours, with more places to eat in town. Keep dogs under close control and clear of rowing crews and wildlife. Regatta and festival preparations can divert or temporarily close sections of the towpath. Check Thames Path notices and Environment Agency river conditions before travelling.

Route and access checked on 3 October 2026 against Henley Town Council's Mill Meadows information and the riverside section of the National Trust's Hambleden Mill to Henley walk. This is a Henley-starting out-and-back variation.
