About this walk
Start at the path junction beside the Dew Pond, just downhill from Hughenden's main car park. This circuit follows the National Trust's purple German Forest trail, with woodland paths and views across Echo Valley. Allow about an hour and a quarter, including pauses.
Turn left at the Dew Pond junction, then right after roughly 25 metres onto the woodland path. Continue past yews and laurels to the five-path junction. Take the first path on the left downhill, turn left along the valley-bottom path, then turn left uphill before the field gate. At the T-junction, turn right along the lower edge of Hanging Wood.
Continue towards Hughenden Manor, climbing the short steep slope to the sunken estate road. Follow it between the flint walls, watching for vehicles. Pass the Stableyard, then take the uphill route beside the orchard to the visitor kiosk and back towards the Dew Pond.
Expect exposed roots, forestry ruts, mud and uneven cambers. Boots with grip are useful after rain. This is a short walk but it includes a steep climb, so allow extra time on the hill. Keep dogs under close control and on leads around livestock and in signed visitor areas.
Main-car-park users must show National Trust membership or pay the estate admission charge; parking is included. Check the current gate times before travelling. The Stableyard has a cafe and toilets. Follow any forestry diversions and choose daylight.
Based on the National Trust's German Forest Walk, starting at the Dew Pond junction. Full trail map and current visitor guidance checked on 3 October 2026. https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/oxfordshire-buckinghamshire-berkshire/hughenden/german-forest-walk-at-hughenden

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
