About this walk
Start at the public Common Haugh car park, entered from Victoria Road in Hawick. This roughly 4 km circuit combines the River Teviot with Wilton Lodge Park's trees, lawns and Hawick Museum. Allow about 1 hour 30 minutes for the walk, with extra time for a museum or café stop.
Walk through the car park towards its river edge, then follow the path upstream to the park gates. Take the main avenue to the museum. Continue on the park paths across the small burn bridge and join the Teviot-side path, keeping the river on your left. Follow it around the playing fields to the far western end of the park. Turn onto the returning park path, keeping the playing fields to your right, and follow it back towards the museum. Return along the avenue and the river-edge approach to Common Haugh. Stay on the mapped park circuit; the Violet Woods and its stepped waterfall route are separate options.
Most of the walk is on surfaced paths, with gentle slopes and some uneven patches. Wet leaves and ice can be slippery. The river is unfenced in places, and low paths may be affected by high water. Use the paths and keep back from the bank. Share space with cyclists and watch for vehicles in the car park and at the short road approach to the gates. Follow any park works or event diversions. Carry water and use shoes with a good grip.
The council currently lists Common Haugh parking as free. Local events can restrict access, and the council says the site is unavailable for parking during the first two weeks of June because of the fair. Check the signs before leaving a vehicle. The park has the Pavilion Café and Hawick Museum; toilets and indoor facilities depend on their opening hours.
Researched on 2 October 2026 using the council's Teviot and Wilton Lodge Park route map, current park and parking pages, and OpenStreetMap. The council closure list was checked. This is researched guidance, not a firsthand condition report; recheck notices and the weather before going. Mapping: © OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL.

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
