About this walk

Follow the lower Harthope Valley from Carey Burn Bridge to Langleeford, with the burn, alder trees and views towards the Cheviot and Hedgehope alongside the way. This is a valley-floor return walk on the surfaced lane and farm approach, with a gentle rise upstream.

Start on the broad grassy parking verge on the right before Carey Burn Bridge when arriving from Wooler. Walk onto the lane, cross the road bridge and turn up the valley. Keep to the main lane past the Langlee farm access, rather than crossing the burn towards the cottage. Continue past the grassy Hawsen Burn parking area and cross the small road bridge. Follow the farm lane over New Burn to Langleeford. At the junction beside the bridge to the farm, turn back before entering the farm yard or continuing onto the upper-valley track. Return by the same lane.

Allow about two and a half hours for the 8.5 km return, including short stops to look along the valley. The lane has no pavement and carries farm and visitor traffic, so keep alert at bends and use the verge where practical. The starting verge can be soft after rain. There are no toilets or refreshments on the route; Wooler has the nearest services. Keep dogs under close control around livestock, leave entrances and passing places clear, and follow parking signs on arrival.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
