About this walk
Hareshaw Linn is a classic Northumberland woodland walk that builds gently towards a clear natural focal point rather than dropping you straight into the scenery. Starting from the National Park car park near Bellingham, the route follows a well-defined path through a narrow, wooded valley carved by the Hareshaw Burn, leading to the waterfall hidden deep within the gorge.
The walk is around 3 miles, roughly 4.8 km, out and back and usually takes between an hour and a half and two hours at a relaxed pace. The path is easy to follow but not flat, with steady climbs, short descents and uneven ground in places. After wet weather it can be muddy and slippery, so decent footwear makes a real difference. It is accessible to most walkers with a reasonable level of fitness and works well for families and dogs if you take your time on the steeper sections.
The woodland is one of the main reasons this walk stands out. Hareshaw Linn is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, with mature oak, ash, hazel and elm, and a damp microclimate that supports an unusually rich mix of mosses, liverworts and lichens. The burn is crossed several times by small bridges, and along the way you pass subtle traces of the area’s industrial past, including old spoil heaps and remnants of ironworking activity.
Wildlife is a quiet but constant presence. Red squirrels, woodpeckers, dippers and bats are all known to inhabit the valley, and the sheltered setting makes it feel calm even on busier days. The final approach narrows as the gorge tightens, and the waterfall appears almost suddenly, dropping around nine metres into a rocky pool. After rain it is particularly dramatic, though even in drier conditions the setting feels enclosed and atmospheric.
As a Walkmates walk, Hareshaw Linn works well because it offers a clear shared destination and a steady sense of progression. It is long enough to feel like a proper outing but short enough to fit into a half day, making it a reliable option for a social walk or a self-guided wander in the southern reaches of Northumberland National Park. It pairs naturally with time spent in Bellingham and suits anyone looking for woodland, water and a rewarding finish without committing to a long upland route.
