About this walk
Start at the main visitor car park’s signed pedestrian approach at Croft Castle, near Yarpole. Check in at Visitor Reception before setting out. This 2.3 km circuit follows Fishpool Valley’s woodland paths, with its landscaped pools, grotto and Gothic pumphouse. Allow about 75 minutes, including time to look at the valley’s historic features.
From the visitor area, follow the pumphouse waymarkers across the field and into the valley. Continue north with the pools on your right, using the established woodland path. At the upper turn, cross to the other side of the valley and head south past the grotto. Follow the signed descent towards the pumphouse, cross the dam on the walking path and climb back to the main track. Turn along the lower valley track, then take the uphill connection back to the car park. Use the current waymarkers where restored paths meet the wider woodland tracks.
Although short, this walk includes slopes, uneven ground and narrow sections beside the pools. Mud, roots, wet leaves and steps can slow the descent, so wear footwear with grip and take your time at the dam crossing. Stay on the paths and outside any fenced restoration areas. Do not enter the water or climb on historic ruins. Dogs are welcome on leads and must be kept close around grazing livestock. Close gates behind you.
The National Trust charges admission to the parkland for non-members; eligible members should bring their membership card. Use the signed estate entrance off the B4362 at Cock Gate, between Bircher and Mortimer’s Cross. Check current entry arrangements, opening times and any local path notices before travelling, and return before the park closes. Toilets and the Carpenter’s tea-room are near the castle visitor area during opening hours. A castle visit can be added separately; it is not part of the mapped walking circuit.

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
