About this walk

Start beside the pedestrian approach at Berrington Hall’s main visitor car park, then check in at Visitor Reception. This 5.2 km circuit combines open parkland, the Morton Ride woodland option, a lakeside return and the Windmill Hill loop. Allow around 2½ hours, including pauses for views of the Hall and its landscaped park.

Leave the visitor area on the marked parkland path towards George’s Plantation, then follow the woodland connection west to Morton Ride. Continue south through the trees and cross the small footbridges at the lower end of the lake. Turn north on the lakeside path, then cross the park to the estate’s entrance drive and follow it back towards the Triumphal Arch. Finish with the waymarked loop towards North Lodge and around Windmill Hill before returning to the car park. This mapped version joins sections of the National Trust’s parkland and woodland walks; it is not an exact copy of the shorter purple circuit.

Expect natural surfaces, gates, muddy hollows and uneven woodland ground. The climb and descent around Windmill Hill are steeper than the rest of the walk, so this is graded moderate despite the fairly short distance. Wear footwear with grip, use the bridges rather than muddy alternatives and keep clear of the lake’s edge. Dogs must stay on leads, with particular care around the tenant’s grazing livestock. Close gates and follow the estate waymarkers.

Non-members need admission to Berrington’s gardens and parkland; eligible National Trust members should bring their card. Parking is beside reception. Check current admission arrangements and opening times, and allow time to return before the park closes. Toilets are available at the car park and courtyard, with refreshments in the visitor area during opening hours. Some stretches share the estate drive with arriving vehicles: keep to the side and watch for traffic. The route stays inside the estate and does not require walking along or crossing the A49.

Joining a walk

A few things to know before you make plans.

Can I join if no one else is going?

You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.

What if there is no date yet?

Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.

What does the organiser do?

The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.

Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.

Can I walk this route on my own?

Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.

What happens after I join?

Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.

How do I confirm plans with the group?

Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
