About this walk
Start at the lower Cotehele Quay car park beside the River Tamar. This circuit follows the National Trust Danescombe Valley route, taking the Chapel Path above the intertidal fields and along the edge of the Valley Garden to the Calstock Viaduct viewpoint. Climb to the junction, then turn towards Calstock and take the left turn at the lower junction into Danescombe Valley.
Pass the preserved sawmill ruins and cross the stream at the cottages. Continue up the wooded valley on the public footpath until it reaches the lane. Turn left along the short lane section, cross the small road bridge, and take the gated Lady Walk on the left. The return runs across the field and through woodland, passing traces of the mining landscape and a view across the Tamar. At the southern junction, follow the path beside the Valley Garden to the visitor courtyard, then descend Bottom Drive through the white gate and return to the quay. The optional papermill spur is not included.
Allow about two hours for the steep climbs and descents, uneven ground and stops at the viewpoints and ruins. Boots are useful, especially when the field and woodland paths are muddy. Keep to the marked paths around the former mining sites, and watch for vehicles on the short lane section and shared driveway. Dogs should be on leads on the estate paths. This route has steep sections and is unsuitable for reduced mobility.
The quay car park charges for non-members; National Trust members must check in. Check the parking signs and opening arrangements on arrival. Toilets are at the quay and visitor reception. The Edgcumbe cafe at the quay is currently closed for building work; the kiosk offers refreshments on weekends and during October half term. Check the National Trust Cotehele page before travelling for changes.

Joining a walk
A few things to know before you make plans.
Can I join if no one else is going?
You can be the first to join a scheduled walk. A suggested date is an idea for a group walk; choose Set this date up to organise it. Check the participant list and meeting details before setting off.
What if there is no date yet?
Choose Put a date on this walk to organise a group walk. Not ready to choose a day? Follow the route for scheduling updates, or save it for later.
What does the organiser do?
The organiser sets the date and meeting details and helps the group get started. They are a fellow walker and may be new to the route too.
Each walker is responsible for their own safety and navigation. Check the route, weather, equipment and whether the walk suits your experience and fitness.
Can I walk this route on my own?
Yes. Choose Walk this route on your own to open the start screen, then start when you are ready. Finish the walk to add it to your walking history. You do not need a group date.
What happens after I join?
Use the walk page to check meeting details, updates and who is going. Check in from 24 hours before the start to let the group know you still plan to come.
How do I confirm plans with the group?
Check the participant list and check-ins, and message the organiser or other walkers to confirm where to meet and who is coming. This is especially useful when the group is small.
